PLATO’S PARMENIDES (cont.) (ONLINE)

The Parmenides is the pinnacle of Platonic philosophy.  Essentially it is both a training in inquiry as well as a rigorous and extensive examination of what “one” is.  The dialogue begins with Socrates as a young man presenting what has come to known as the Platonic Theory of Forms to a mature Parmenides.  Socrates is not at this stage capable of defending the Theory under Parmenides’ onslaught of difficulties.  However, Parmenides reluctantly agrees to give a demonstration of the sort of training Socrates will need if he is ever to become a full-fledged philosopher.
